DAY 1 :

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a representative from Serengeti Heroes Safaris will greet you and facilitate your transfer to the hotel included in your package. The hotel offers all the essentials for a comfortable stay, featuring cozy rooms, hot water, courteous staff, a refreshing swimming pool, and Internet access. An evening briefing with our managers will ensure you are well-prepared to commence your climb.

For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group. Additional charges may apply for individual transfers, so coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times can help avoid extra costs.

PLEASE NOTE: Check-in begins at 2:00 PM.

In the morning, a guide and the mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel for a brief orientation. Subsequently, you will embark on a 3-4 hour journey by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park’s western entrance, Londorossi Gate (2,250 m / 7,380 ft). After securing climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will proceed uphill via off-road vehicles, reaching an elevation of 3,600 meters (11,482 feet). Here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Shira Plateau.

The trek from the drop-off point to Shira 1 Camp involves a gradual ascent and presents no significant physical challenges, allowing for effective acclimatization. Upon arrival at the camp, our experienced mountain crew will have already set up the tents and begun preparing a delicious dinner, ensuring your comfort and well-being throughout the journey.

PLEASE NOTE: The acclimatization hike aids in the acclimatization process, significantly enhancing the chances of a successful Kilimanjaro ascent and mitigating altitude sickness risks.

As it’s your first day at this altitude, adhere to the following guidelines:

– Refrain from consuming alcohol and caffeine.
– Hydrate with over 4 liters of bottled water daily, sipped frequently.
– Consider using preventive measures like high-altitude aid medicine to alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness; consult your doctor beforehand for potential allergies or health concerns.

Nighttime may bring discomfort due to acclimatization to high altitude. Your body receives less oxygen during reduced nighttime breathing, potentially causing sickness or headaches. Be attentive to your body and inform your guide of any symptoms of altitude sickness.

Trekking time: 1-2 hours         Hiking distance Distance:  5 km

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Embark on an exciting journey as you leave Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m / 11,843 ft) and trek towards the second high-altitude camp, Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,628 ft). This trek, offering stunning views of the African savannah, the unique flora of Kilimanjaro, and the surrounding area, is not challenging. Shira 2 Camp provides the perfect vantage point, weather permitting, to witness Mount Meru, the fifth summit of Africa and the second-highest in Tanzania.

En route, our guides will present the opportunity to ascend Cathedral Peak – 3872 meters (12,703 feet), one of the highest points of the extinct Shira volcano. Aside from the captivating hiking experience, reaching the summit of Cathedral Peak on a clear day affords breathtaking views into the valley, a favorite among our team after a decade of working on the mountain. This straightforward hike, free of technical challenges, may encounter clouds, but a stella provides a chance for a memorable photograph. Opting to skip this ascent or heading directly to Shira 2 in case of unfavorable weather is feasible without impacting acclimatization since both locations stand at a similar elevation. However, we passionately recommend the hike to Cathedral Peak for its worth.

Upon arrival at Shira 2 Camp, enjoy lunch, and after a two-hour rest, partake in an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp, featuring a 300 m / 984 ft gain in altitude.

Lemosho Route FAQ

How hard is the Lemosho Route compared to other routes?

The climb is moderately challenging but achievable for average individuals in decent shape. It is particularly suitable for beginners, boasting high success rates.

How many miles in the Lemosho Route?

The 8-day Lemosho route covers approximately 70 km (43 miles), while the 6 and 7-day variations span around 56 km (35 miles), positioning Lemosho in between other Kilimanjaro routes in terms of length.

Where does the Lemosho route start?

The 8-day variation starts at Londorossi Gate (2250m), while the 6-7 day options begin with a vehicle drop-off at 3,414m on the Shira Plateau.

What is the difference between Lemosho 7 Days and Lemosho 8 Days packages?

  • The 7-day itinerary begins at 3,414m, accelerating your acclimatization process. While this offers more time at altitude, some hikers may find the rapid ascent uncomfortable. The initial two days involve relatively easy hikes.
  • In contrast, the 8-day route starts at 2,100m, featuring a more challenging first day. However, starting at a lower altitude allows for gradual acclimatization and an enjoyable hike through the rainforest. Both routes are recommended for climbers of all levels, offering excellent acclimatization profiles and summit success rates of over 90%.

What is the difference between Lemosho 8 Days and Northern Circuit?

  • The Lemosho 8-day route and Northern Circuit 8 provide stunning scenery and favorable acclimatization profiles. The Northern Circuit offers views of Kilimanjaro from all sides but is generally considered less scenic due to lower rainfall and less diverse vegetation.
  • The Northern Circuit is less crowded and better suited for hikers with greater endurance. It also offers the option to bypass the Barranco Wall. Both routes offer excellent acclimatization and accessibility without technical skills.

Is the Barranco Wall on Lemosho Route?

Yes, the Lemosho route goes via the Barranco Wall. Despite its appearance, many climbers navigate it successfully, including seniors, without significant difficulty.
